Labs and research centers: Building the future of technology research

Joining a research center is a major undertaking. The greatest benefit will come if your company plans on a significant investment and a multiyear commitment. Pooling your research efforts with other companies provides powerful economic leverage. Ideas, challenges, and even people will flow both ways for years to come. Supporting a research center can put a company literally side-by-side in the lab with Stanford engineers.

Affiliate programs: A technology window

Joining an affiliate program lets you look over the shoulders of top faculty and students through regular meetings and updates. We maintain dozens of programs in areas ranging from earthquake engineering to photonics.

Joining a program gives corporate affiliates more than access to the latest research developments. It also serves as an industry roundtable for emerging technologies. Stanford is neutral ground, where companies can share precompetitive information and compare notes on the roadmap of things to come. The relationships that develop with students create unique recruiting opportunities.

A completely autonomous Volkswagen Touareg won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge

Successful partnerships

Great things happen when Stanford engineers team up with supporters in industry. Stanley, a completely autonomous Volkswagen Touareg, won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, a race around the Nevada desert in which the cars had to make all their own driving decisions. Then in 2007, Stanley's successor Junior took second place in a race through the traffic of human stunt drivers and other robots. In each case, the team was based in the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab, but benefitted greatly from expertise and other support from Volkswagen of America's Electronics Research Lab, MDV Mohr Davidow Ventures, Intel, Red Bull, and others.
